Eels down Dragons in one point thriller

The Parramatta Eels recorded their second consecutive victory against the St George Illawarra Dragons at the ANZ Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Eels halfback Brett Finch kicked the match-winning field goal in the 74th minute when he made the score 19-12. But five minutes later one of his kicks was charged down; resulting in a Dragons try and a nail-biting finish.

However it was the Dragons overall failure to capitalize on their opportunities which was the ultimate catalyst for their 19-18 loss.

The Dragons case was also not helped by some dubious referee decisions which greatly displeased the red and white contingent of the 16,313 crowd.

The Eels were on the attack early. In the seventh minute, they created an overlap on the right side with the ball finding Eric Grothe. Grothe ran straight over his opposite number and planted the ball down in the corner. Luke Burt converted from the sideline.

The Dragons counter-attacked, and they looked to have scored a try in the 32nd minute. But video referee Steve Clark ruled that Matt Cooper had stripped the ball from Grothe.

The Eels took advantage of the psychological blow and scored a try of their own just one minute later. Finch created a gap for the man-of-the-match Nathan Hindmarsh. The second rower then got a ball away to Burt, who ran untouched to the try line. The try scorer also converted.

Three minutes before half-time, the Dragons hit back. Mark Gasnier used some fancy footwork to out-maneuver Jarryd Hayne. He then flicked the ball to Chase Stanley who scored in the corner. Jamie Soward converted and the score was 12-6 at half time.

The Dragons attacked desperately early in the second half when they forced charge downs and intercepts.

However it was the Eels who scored the first points again with Hayne scoring in the left corner after an overlap was created. Burt converted from the sideline in the 53rd minute.

The Dragons continued to dominate play, and they finally created a try when Jason Nightingale scored in the left corner in the 60th minute. Jamie Soward not only threw the try-scoring pass but also converted from the sideline to reduce the deficit to six.

The Finch field-goal in the 74th minute looked to have sealed the game for the Eels.

Then, after five charge-downs, the Dragons finally capitalized on one of them in the 80th minute. Matt Cooper scooped up the leftovers and scored under the posts.

The remaining 40 seconds were not enough for the Dragons to score any more points.

The Eels will look to wine three from three when they play the Sydney Roosters at home next Friday night.

The Dragons will hope that ANZ Stadium brings them better luck next Saturday when they take on the Melbourne Storm.

Eels Savouring Victory Over Panthers

The Parramatta Eels have scored a pressure relieving 26-18 victory over Penrith in their round eight NRL Premiership clash at CUA Stadium this evening.

In a season defining effort the Eels turned around an eight-point deficit then ran in four tries in 11 minutes to stamp their authority on the match.

After scoring the first try of the match the Eels went into their shells, allowing Penrith to score twice on the way to a 14-6 half time lead.

However there were signs of better times ahead and playing at first a more composed then more adventurous brand of Rugby League in the second half they ran away with the win.

With five players backing up from City-Country the Eels got off to a shaky start, a third minute bomb from Country half Brett Finch going 10 metres back towards their goal line.

However after repelling the Panthers with some hard goal line defence the Eels scored on their first trip inside Penrith's 22, a neat second man play from hooker Matt Keating sending Daniel Wagon in under the posts without a hand being laid upon him.

Luke Burt added the extras to bring up his 1000th First Grade point and put the Eels out to a 6-nil lead after 12 minutes.

Three minutes later the Panthers had their first, skipper Petero Civoniceva repelling the attempted tackles of Matt Keating and Luke Burt to score a try that took video referee Graeme West ten replays to award.

Soon after the Panthers took the lead, big man Tony Puletua hitting the line wide out to score 12 metres in from the left hand touch line.

The Eels fell into a hole for the remainder of the first half, Penrith playing a far more adventurous brand of football for little reward.

The only addition to the scoreboard before the break came off the boot of Sammut, who nailed a goal from in front after the Eels were penalised for a drop out not going ten, however the Panthers were unlucky not to extend their lead further with referee Ben Cummins ruling Nathan Smith was held up over the line just before half time.

Luck played a hand twice for the Eels after the resumption, the end result of which was the narrowing of the deficit to four points at 14-10.

First the Panthers had what looked to be a legitimate length of the field try disallowed, with referee Cummins ruling Michael Gordon had caught the ball on the full in the in goal before he sprinted 95 metres to lay on a try for Luke Priddis.

Then Nathan Hindmarsh touched down for the Eels in the 11th minute of the half, the Country representative scoring off a Feleti Mateo kick which only came about after play had appeared to break down.

Quick hands on the short side saw the Eels take the lead three minutes later, Jarryd Hayne and Taulima Tautai combining before flinging it back in the other direction to Mateo who scored in the right hand corner.

Burt conversion from wide out put the Eels ahead again 16-14.

Two sets of six later the Eels were in again, a beautiful ball across the ruck setting Weller Hauraki on a path to the tryline.

The back rowers first try in First Grade was converted by Burt, seeing the Eels out to an eight-point buffer with 20 minutes left to play.

With offloads hitting the mark the Eels scored their fourth try in 11 minutes, Joel Reddy going over in the corner after the ball was kept alive by Mateo, Finch and Matt Keating.

The Panthers kept themselves in the hunt with a try to Michael Jennings five minutes from full time, however their cause was then set back when Sammut's conversion attempt hit the post and bounced back into the field of play.

That was where it finished, Eels fans in the crowd of 18,724 erupting as full time sounded.

Representative players Finch, Hindmarsh, Mateo, Jarryd Hayne and Chad Robinson were outstanding for the winners, as were interchange players Hauraki and Junior Paulo, fullback Luke Burt, skipper Nathan Cayless and the Keating brothers, Matt and Kris.

The Eels next match is on Mothers Day, Sunday May 11 against St George-Illawarra at ANZ Stadium.

Manly overcomes fast-finishing Eels

The Sea Eagles have survived a second-half revival from the Eels to prevail 20-16 in dreadful conditions at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.

Manly's gritty victory, their third of the season, sees last season's grand-finalist maintain their spot inside the top-eight, while the Eels remain stranded at the wrong end of the ladder.

Having led by 10 points at the break the Sea Eagles surrendered their lead midway through the second-stanza, and with Steve Menzies, Michael Bani and Luke Williamson all sidelined with injury, the Eels looked likely to steal the first victory of the NRL's heritage round.

But Manly somehow managed to muster a fourth and match-winning try from a simple-set-play which saw Heath L'Estrange cross untouched in the 74th minute.

Manly drew first-blood in the fifth minute after a bizarre sequence of play.

Prop Josh Perry put Steve Menzies into open space but the veteran could not find the open man on his outside as Eric Grothe appeared to deny the Eagles.

Grothe quickly turned from hero to villain - the strapping winger tore across field and delivered an errant pass to Jarryd Hayne which bounced into the path of Eagles flyer Michael Bani who crossed for his fifth try of the season.

Matt Orford added the extras from the sideline to hand the Eagles a 6-0 advantage.

But the visitor's try came at a cost with Menzies forced from the field with a hamstring injury.
Parramatta hit back in the 10th minute in the form of a Luke Burt penalty goal to make it 6-2.

Manly's response was swift as Orford and Michael Robertson combined to hand the visitors a valuable 10-2 lead after 16 minutes as the rain continued to fall.

Grothe looked to have a searching kick from Orford well and truly covered but showed little urgency as Robertson somehow won the race for the ball to post Manly's second four-pointer.

Another penalty goal late in the half saw the Eels close to within a converted try, 10-4, at the break.

Incumbent Kangaroos fullback Brett Stewart gave the Eagles some breathing space seven minutes after the break.

The Eels defence looked to have the prolific fullback covered but were guilty of ball-watching as the visitors extended to a 14-4 lead.

Parramatta had to be the next to score and they found inspiration from an unlikely source - the boot of Nathan Hindmarsh.

The inspirational back-rower delivering a well-weighted kick which Eagles skipper Matt Orford failed to grasp - Chad Robinson won the race to the ball to cut the deficit to 14-10.

The momentum stayed with the hosts who took their first lead of the night with 20 minutes remaining.

Parramatta's second try again came from the boot as Feleti Mateo delivered a pin-point kick for Luke Burt who took the ball in Manly's dead-ball area unchallenged.

The try scorer added the extras from in front to lead 16-14 - but it was not to be for Michael Hagan's men.
